Wonder Woman 2 cast, director, plot, release date and everything you need to know

With Wonder Woman proving a bigger critical and commercial success than anyone predicted, it's no surprise that all eyes quickly turned to the potential for a sequel.

Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder confirmed plans for Wonder Woman 2 even before Patty Jenkins's first film hit our screens. Here's everything we know about the DC Extended Universe movie, from Jenkins and Gal Gadot's return to a major time jump between films.
Come back regularly, as we'll be updating this article with new information as we find it.

Wonder Woman 2 plot: What's happening?

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in the final Batman v Superman trailer
Prepare yourself for a leap across time between the first and second movies. Wonder Woman was set in 1918 at the end of World War I, whereas the sequel looks like it's going to be set in the '80s and follow a Cold War narrative. Initially it looked like we would find Diana in the modern day – which would put her in a post-Justice League world.
The '80s setting though suggests she'll be granted a second true standalone movie before she even encounters the likes of Batman and Superman.
We also know where Jenkins wants it set. Diana was based in the Louvre in the Wonder Woman, but the director has her eye on the home of superheroes – the United States.

Justice League Wonder Woman Aquaman Cyborg
"The story will take place in the US, which I think is right," Jenkins told Entertainment Weekly. "She's Wonder Woman. She's got to come to America. It's time."
There go our dreams of a Parisian adventure. At least Jenkins is committed to making Wonder Woman's invisible jet a big screen reality.
Cheetah Wonder Woman Rebirth
As for the villain, Wonder Woman is rumoured to be going up against her classic foe, Cheetah. The Cheetah is British archaeologist Dr Barbara Ann Minerva, who is cursed to transform into a cheetah woman who hungers for human flesh. She is sometimes portrayed as an old friend of Diana's who struggles against her unfortunate bloodlust.

Wonder Woman 2 director

Warner Bros confirmed at Comic Con that there would definitely be a Wonder Woman 2.
Jenkins was teasing her plans for the sequel before she had officially signed on, but after some back and forth, she has, of course. Superman: The Movie director Richard Donner has even passed her the baton.
She's working on the script with veteran DC Comics writer Geoff Johns and The Expendables' David Callaham.

Wonder Woman 2 cast: Who's in it?

Wonder Woman first look: Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Lisa Loven Kongsli as Menalippe and Robin Wright as General Antiope
Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot, is of course signed up for the next film.
Game of Thrones' Pedro Pascal is on board in a mystery role, and Jenkins has also confirmed on Twitter that Kristen Wiig will play the film's villain, Cheetah.
The mortal cast members from the first movie will all be dead from old age in the present day, so we've probably seen the last of Saïd Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner and Eugene Brave Rock. There was a rumour that Chris Pine's Steve Trevor would be returning, though if this is true there are several obstacles, the biggest being that he's dead. Flashback? Steve Trevor Junior? Some kind of resurrection storyline? Or just a bit of misinformation? Who can say at this point.
Justice League is bringing back one of Wonder Woman's mightiest Amazon warriors
However, Connie Nielsen was back as Queen Hippolyta for Justice League, so there's every chance she'll return for Wonder Woman 2. Sadly, Robin Wright's Justice League role turned out to just be a flashback to the dead General Antiope, so don't expect a resurrection for her.
Diana has a load of Justice League friends like Ben Affleck's Batman, Henry Cavill's Superman and Ezra Miller's Flash just ripe for cameos too.
Classic TV Wonder Woman Lynda Carter is totally up for appearing in the new film after she they didn't manage to fit her into the first. Just saying, Warner Bros.
Emma Thompson would totally be up for it too, incidentally.

Wonder Woman 2 release date: When can I see it?

Wonder Woman Gal Gadot surprised
Although rumour had it that Warners was holding back on major DCEU announcements until it saw how Justice League performs in the autumn, we now have a confirmed Wonder Woman 2 release date.
Originally announced for December 13, 2019, the film is now coming more than a month earlier on November 1, 2019.
And there's lots more to come from the DCEU in the next few years – take a deep breath, because Aquaman, Batgirl, The Batman, Nightwing, Gotham City Sirens, Shazam!, Black Adam, The Flash, Suicide Squad 2, Justice League Dark and Green Lantern Corps are all on the slate.

Wonder Woman 2 will begin shooting in the summer of 2017.
